She has received an Academy Award nod for the role she performed as Donnie Genesis Rodriguez in Dances with Wolves, as Stands With A Fist. Alongside this McDonnell is known for her role as Laura Roslin (President of Battlestar Galactica) and the president's spouse in Independence Day as well as her main role in the film in the role of Donnie Darko's mother.
